Physical education

Physical education (PE) is a compulsory part of the national curriculum for all pupils at every Key Stage, from age four to 16.

Here at Kettering Park Junior Academy pupils enjoy a minimum of 2 hours a week of structured physical activity each week.  PE lessons are taught by a sports specialist learning partner, supported by class teachers. In addition children have the opportunity to take part in a number of extra curricular sports clubs and activities each week.

Over the course of the academic year the children will take part in the following sports and activities during their PE lessons:

  • Athletics
  • Basketball
  • Benchball
  • Circuit training/Fitness
  • Cricket
  • Football
  • Gymnastics
  • Handball
  • Hockey
  • Netball
  • Rounders
  • Tennis
  • Swimming*

Each child will have a total of 12 weeks of swimming lessons (split between year 4 and year 5) to teach them to:

  • swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
  • use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
  • perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations

We follow the Northamptonshire School Swimming Scheme and children are awarded certificates to celebrate their achievements.

Sports Teams

Teams from Kettering Park Junior Academy have participated in a number of sports tournaments and leagues.  In the past 12 months we have entered teams in local tournaments for hockey, benchball, athletics, tag rugby, cricket and multi-skills.

We currently have 2 teams of Year 5 and 6 children taking part in the Pacesetters Football League at Kettering Leisure Village.

Clubs and Activities

The children can take part in a number of extra-curricular sports clubs and activities during the school year. These change each term to give the children the opportunity to experience a wide range of sports and are run by our sports specialist and teachers.

In addition to these after-school clubs, the children can take part in 'paid for' clubs before school which are run by external sports providers - please see our club brochure for more details.
